Welcome! Update December 2025 below!
Welcome to the provisional website for the Maes Aeron Buddhist Sangha, a registered CIO based in Aberystwyth (* notes at end on CIO and terminology). We are working to establish a non-denominational Buddhist space offering free-of-charge meditation sessions, day and weekend retreats and access to a library of Buddhist texts.
- Update December 2025. Building work is progressing well, but more slowly than hoped. Once this is completed we will be able to offer ground floor space for meditation, retreats etc with step-free access to bathroom facilities. Additional accessibility needs will then be addressed. Provisional opening date now some time in 2026. In the meantime, the charity remains in official hibernation, maintaining this website and supporting other related charities which share Buddhist teachings. This has been a year where people suffering the poisons of greed, ignorance and aversion have often seemed to prosper, but we are trying not to become downhearted; we remain committed to a positive vision of a space to share the Buddha’s teachings for the benefit of all sentient beings, acknowledging the importance of patience. With this in mind, we close 2025 by sharing a stirring podcast from the Zen tradition and wish everyone a very happy New Year.

- September 2025: Building work has finally started on creating disabled bathroom access. We have also received a very generous donation from a friend – the complete set of the ‘Library of Wisdom and Compassion’ by HH The Dalai Lama and Thubten Chodron. This wonderful resource for anyone interested in following a Tibetan path will be available to all in our reading room.

We are fortunate in the UK that there are now so many opportunities to engage with Buddhist teachings. Personal contact with an established lineage is very important, and will be at the heart of our charity’s work once we emerge from hibernation, but the range of different paths can be overwhelming to newcomers, so here are a few useful links for anyone considering a Buddhist path.
Tricycle Review ‘Where to Start’ free online resources Tricycle. This organisation produces a digital and hard copy magazine several times a year, and offers some free access to articles to non-subscribers.
Gaia House Meditation Centre, offers courses and links to offerings from many different traditions here.
For those interested in the different Tibetan lineages, the ‘Federation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition’ provides a a wealth of online material and free books (this site may be a little overwhelming at first!) FPMT.
The Thai Forest Tradition, a Theravada school, has a well-established presence in the UK, with centres such as Amaravati offering in-person teachings and free books here.
Many traditions associated with particular cultures and countries open their doors to share their Buddhist practice. As we start 2026, we encourage you to look at the activities of the Vietnamese Buddhists who are engaged in a Walk for Peace across the USA.
- ** We have been guided by the Charity Commission in using the word ‘sangha’ to describe our organisation, as this is the most widely understood western terminology for a Buddhist community. As we are not a formal part of a Buddhist school, we are not a sangha in the traditional sense (i.e. a community of monks and nuns within an established lineage or the wider ‘community’ of enlightened beings). Technically we count our community as a ‘parisa’ (‘an assembly of the Buddha’s followers).CIO = Charitable Incorporated Organisation.Charity Details: Registration no: 1205476, 31st October 2023.
